Please do not hesitate drop by my office hours or set up an appointment if you have advising or administrative questions, or if you would like help with chemistry or anything else. A few notes to start the term: - ENTRYWAY MEETINGS. There are mandatory meetings in all entryways at the beginning of this term. Please stay tuned for an announcement from your entryway tutor. - LATE REGISTRATION. If you weren't able to register by last Friday for any reason, please get in touch with me ASAP. - ELECTRONIC COURSE ENROLLMENT. The course enrollment tool will open at 7:00 am on Saturday, Sep 8. You'll need to print your study card, obtain all of the required signatures, including that of your in-House sophomore adviser (for sophomores) or your concentration adviser. Turn in the paper study card to the House Office or 20 Garden St by 5:00 pm on Friday, Sep 21 to avoid late study card fees. - CROSS-REGISTRATION. If you wish to cross-register for a course at either MIT or another Harvard faculty, please come by the House office for a cross-registration form. The FAS deadline for cross-registration petitions is October 3, but many of the schools have earlier deadlines of their own. - SIMULTANEOUS ENROLLMENT. Pay close attention to your class schedule Ð if you have a conflict in course times, please read the policies on simultaneous enrollment on pg. 52 of the Handbook for Students, then come and see me if you still have questions. - OFFICE HOURS THIS WEEK. I will have a walk-in office hour all week from 11am to noon. For other times, please contact Kit in the House Office (5-2283, lowell@fas) to set up an appointment with me. Enjoy shopping period! -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ASK BETH, the HOUSE ADMINISTRATOR *Beth Terry, A-22, 5-2283 (lo-admin@fas.harvard.edu) Dear Beth, Who are you, why are you here, and what do you do? Signed, Clueless in C-entry Dear Clueless, I am so glad you asked. These same questions have bothered me for years now. (Who are these people? Why are there so many? Why is my office pink?) The House Administrator's office is here to assist the Masters, the Resident Dean, and to help Lowell House occupants wend their way through the bureaucracies of university administration. My work will affect the room in which you sleep, the fees you are charged, the events you will hear about and that Facebook you'll thumb through.... one of these days...whenever it gets here..... I'll give good advice on housing deadlines, lottery strategies and how to play nice with our Building Manager. I'll even be the one to *personally* reject the proposal to reserve our dining hall for some LoHo Food Fear Factor----an event concept that I know is gestating out there, somewhere, in somebody's too-fertile imagination. ~Beth ~~~ Dear Beth, I need a job and someone told me that there are jobs in the Lowell House library or for teas? Where can I find out more? Signed, Insistently Insolvent Dear Insolvent, The Lowell House Librarian is Tina Warinner (warinner@fas.harvard.edu) and she can let you know if there are any more library positions available. Regarding the Teas, please check in with our new Residence Manager Amy Vest (avest@hds.harvard.edu). She will be managing the Masters' Residence events this year. However, in your search for exciting job opportunities, don't forget the House Office! Kit Gattis (the Staff Assistant) and I are currently searching for a responsible and punctual work-study student who finds delight in mundane clerical duties and feels eager to delve into the mysteries of the Lowell House administration during the Fall (for 8-10 hours a week, at least). Come up to A-22 and get more information. I promise we won't bite. ~Beth ----------------------------------------------------------------------- FROM THE FELLOWSHIPS TUTORS * Josh Goldman (jdgoldm@fas.harvard.edu) * Courtney Peterson (cmpeters@fas.harvard.edu ) LOWELL FELLOWSHIPS MAILING LIST Want to know what fellowships are out there? Although there is no "one size fits all" prescription for wellness, overall wellness requires maintaining a balance of these various health components: -PHYSICAL: Taking care of your physical self through the practice of healthy habits. This includes nutrition, exercise, hygiene, sleep, and illness prevention and management. -SOCIAL: Connecting meaningfully with others and sustaining close relationships with your family and friends (while still having some "me" or "alone" time when you need it). -EMOTIONAL: Feeling positive about yourself and about life, and experiencing emotions in moderation. This does not mean that you are always upbeat Ð we all experience emotional difficulties at some point or another Ð but rather it means that you acknowledge your emotions as they arise but do not cling to them, and you cultivate accepting and nurturing feelings about yourself and your surroundings. -SPIRITUAL: Finding meaning and purpose in life. For many people this includes religion, while others develop this in other ways Ð such as in nature or in community or individual practices. -ENVIRONMENTAL: Making sure the spaces you spend time in are conducive to comfort and productivity. This includes appropriate noise and light levels, minimal distractions, good ergonomics, and a sense of shared respect for community spaces. -VOCATIONAL: Feeling fulfilled in your work and community. This includes deriving satisfaction with your courses, your program of study, and your extracurricular activities and jobs. -INTELLECTUAL: Being involved in activities that you find mentally challenging and rewarding. Throughout the year, wellness tips will provide reminders about each of these elements and suggestions for finding a balance among them in yourself for overall health and wellbeing. Ways of finding your own balance can shift over time, and most people find, especially during college, that they are not always in balance. Relax: do the best that you can with your current circumstances and don't overly fret about the rest. Be FLEXIBLE, be HONEST with yourself about what wellness entails for you, and be ACTIVE in staying well!
