In the next week, remember to take a look at your course listing on my.harvard.edu and make sure that you're enrolled correctly. The deadline to add and drop courses is OCTOBER 15TH, the fifth Monday. Add/drop forms are available in the hallway outside the House Office. - SIMULTANEOUS ENROLLMENT. Pay close attention to your class schedule. If you have a conflict in course times, please read the policies on simultaneous enrollment on p.52 of the Handbook for Students, then come and see me if you still have questions. If you are enrolled in overlapping courses, you have to obtain permission from the Administrative Board to stay in both. - NEW ON-LINE UHS APPOINTMENTS. You can now schedule certain UHS appointments online! To make appointments for 20 minute initial intake conversations or for medication follow-up visits, go to their website at huhs.harvard.edu, and click on "Making an appointment" under the "Our Clinicians and Teams" menu. - OFFICE HOURS THIS WEEK. I will have walk-in office hours this week from 1-2pm on Mon, Tue, Wed, and Fri. For other times, please contact Kit in the House Office (5-2283, lowell@fas) to set up an appointment with me. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ASK BETH, the HOUSE ADMINISTRATOR *Beth Terry, A-22, 5-2283 (lo-admin@fas.harvard.edu) Dear Beth, Is it true that underclassmen may *not* eat on the platform in the dining hall? Is it supposed to be for seniors or something? And who are all the people who eat there with the white tablecloth? I've been seeing them lately. Signed, New Kid on the Block Dear New Kid, Au contraire! You may eat at the High Table. Once a Lowellian, always a Lowellian. The Reverend Professor Peter Gomes put it nicely at last year's Sophomore Dinner: "Éentering the House community is a religious experience" so feel free to get up there on that altar with your reuben sandwich. Now let us address the nomenclature of the Lowell House environment. It is not a "platform," it is a "dais." And the "people of the white tablecloth" (which sounds rather Stephen King to me) are generally referred to as "members of he Senior Common Room." The Senior Common Room is a group of faculty members, administrators and graduate students who intend to serve as resources for you. They are a wonderful group of friendly and accomplished adults who are hoping to hear from you sometime--especially if you are in their field. Their contact information is on our searchable SCR database (located on our website). A brief bio for each of them is also provided to help you get to know them. I could not improve upon this quote from Non-Resident Tutor (Music & Medicine) Channing Yu: "Get to know as many of the Senior Common Room members as you can. We can help you chart a career, land a job through the network of people that we know, resolve conflicts in your life, or simply lend a friendly ear. Two top questions to help SCR members help you: 'I'm interested in ____ and I heard/read that you have worked on ____ as well; can we meet for breakfast/lunch/dinner to talk about how you got started doing this?' and 'I could use some help with ____. Do you know anyone I could talk to about this?' These questions work well even with people you have never met--don't wait for people to approach you first, just give the questions a try!" And remember, if you ever want an introduction to someone, don't ever hesitate to...ASK BETH. ~Beth ----------------------------------------------------------------------- FROM THE FELLOWSHIPS TUTORS * Josh Goldman (jdgoldm@fas.harvard.edu) * Courtney Peterson (cmpeters@fas.harvard.edu) LOWELL FELLOWSHIPS MAILING LIST Want to know what fellowships are out there? Spend a couple extra moments in the dining hall preparing your meal and enjoy the difference! You can give your food an extra healthy and appetizing kick with a little creativity. Here's an idea or two to get you goingÉ * FRESH, TASTY & HEALTHY SALAD DRESSING * In a small bowl add: 1. Couple squirts of honey (by the tea/coffee) 2. Teaspoon of mustard (deli section) 3. Pinch of garlic powder and/or red pepper flakes to taste (above the salad greens) 4. Stirring add a glug of balsamic vinegar and a couple glugs of olive oil (above prepared dressings) 5. Salt and pepper to taste (at your table) Just takes a minute and you're ready to spice up your salad. ALSO, try adding a dab of plain yogurt (maybe with a bit of honey?) for a great dipping sauce OR skip step 4 above for a sweet/tangy sandwich spread. See you in the kitchen! ---------------------------------------------------------------- ANNOUNCEMENTS AND EVENTS ART OUTING TO THE BOSTON ICA (Institute of Contemporary Art) Thursday, October 4 Meet below the bell tower at 6:30pm (and take the T from there) Join an art-loving Lowell gang as we head to the harbor to explore the brand-new ICA.
