You can still withdraw from courses until MONDAY, OCTOBER 29TH. Withdrawing is identical to dropping, except the course remains on your record with a "WD" notation. - DELAYED UPDATES? If you have filed add/drop forms with the House Office but the changes have not yet appeared on your record, don't panic--this is a busy time at 20 Garden St and it may take a little while. Let me know if the changes take more than a week or two and I can help you correct any errors that may have occurred. - BUREAU PEER TUTORING. Feeling a little lost in a class? Consider hiring a peer tutor through the Bureau of Study Counsel. Tutors are paid with a subsidy and the cost is very reasonable. Interested in tutoring other students taking a class that you loved? Sign up as a tutor! For more information, see the Bureau website: http://bsc.harvard.edu/tutor.html - OFFICE HOURS THIS WEEK. I will have walk-in office hours this week from 1-2 on Mon, and on Tue, Wed, and Thurs from 11-noon. For other times, please contact Kit in the House Office (5-2283, lowell@fas) to set up an appointment with me. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ASK BETH, the HOUSE ADMINISTRATOR *Beth Terry, A-22, 5-2283 (lo-admin@fas.harvard.edu) Dear Beth, I heard that those old red phones are being reinstalled in our rooms. I thought they were just taken out last year and anyway, I don't want one. Can I send it back? Signed, Feeling Minimalistic in M Dear Feeling- I suggest awaking your compassion looking at your red phones as the suffering migrant population of the emergency response system. Without warning, they were shunted away and left alone in an Allston depot, piled one atop another, purposeless and uncleansed, for many weeks in the hot summer. The bosses tried to sell them, the phone company wanted to repossess them and the artists wanted to glue them together in some freak show of a public sculpture. The poor abandoned phones knew not their fate nor the next place they would be bused to for exploitation. Suddenly the winds of change blew softly on their little crimson cradles and they were rescued from the warehouse. They were gently Purell-ed, lovingly re-stickered with useful messages, and wholly revivified for an important purpose to help you in your student HOME. And now you want to reject them?! For shame. Dial back the dominion of your opinion, I say. The beauty of our red phones (which are very groovy and 'IKEA', if you ask me) is that they provide an accurate locating device for an emergency. You can avail yourself of help in a crisis any time day or night by simply punching 4 numbers: 9-9-1-1 and --unlike your cell phone-- this call will *not* end up at some Sheriff's office in Fitchburg MA as "unknown caller". It will go directly to Cambridge PD with appropriate and precise location coding. Isn't that incredible? (Now, if only we could program it for Domino's we would be in business...) ~Beth ----------------------------------------------------------------------- FROM THE FELLOWSHIPS TUTORS * Josh Goldman (jdgoldm@fas.harvard.edu) * Courtney Peterson (cmpeters@fas.harvard.edu) LOWELL FELLOWSHIPS MAILING LIST Want to know what fellowships are out there? Think clearly, speak clearly, feel powerful and confident! Follow these three easy steps to empower your speech: 1. Remove the word "like" from your vocabulary. Until you have successfully erased "like" from your speech, choose "just as" or "such as" when making comparisons or similes. 2. Remove the phrase "sort of" from your vocabulary. Until you have successfully erased "sort of" from your speech, choose "type of" or "kind of" when discussing categories of things. 3. Slow down your speaking. You will have to be more mindful of what you say to accomplish steps 1 & 2, so make it a practice: think before you speak! Remember, WELLNESS includes physical health as well as emotional, spiritual, sexual, social and intellectual well-being. The confidence that comes from expressing yourself clearly will bring you stability and will keep you on a healthy wellness track. Be well. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- FROM YOUR PRE-MED ADVISING TUTORS * Benjamin Rapoport (chair), Marlys Fassett, Ilya Leskov and Mary Alexander * lohomed@fas.harvard.edu.
