I will have walk-in office hours this week from 11-noon on Tue and Wed, and 2-3pm on Fri. For other times, please contact Kit in the House Office (A-22, 5-2283, lowell@fas) to set up an appointment with me. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ASK BETH, the HOUSE ADMINISTRATOR *Beth Terry, A-22, 5-2283 (lo-admin@fas.harvard.edu) This week your intrepid administrator was unable to attend the bi-annual Trivia Festivities. She therefore prevailed upon the emcee of the evening, Bryan Haut '08, to provide a report. What follows is his version, in free lyric verse: *** there was a really big crowd first round the SCR jumped out to a lead of 22 to 14 in the next rounds JCR gave no quarter, especially with the prowess of Greg in the third round. in the fourth round the SCR attempted a dastardly move by replaying Alan Wagner and Laura (I don't know her last name); who had done well in the third and first rounds respectively. The fifth round questions were a bit too difficult. *** Now, I personally think this rivals the modern poets. He presents an unabashedly declarative stance juxtaposed with tantalizing obfuscation of phrase (who is "Greg" ?). The subtly judgmental stance employed by using the adjective 'dastardly' lends an astringent whiff of partisanship to the piece. Finally, he lulls you into the seductive speculation as the last line alludes to a mysterious outcome -- are there multiple endings? Did time stop? Perhaps there was just a deadened silence as the fates decided the future for all?? Wherefore art thou, O Judge, the Dispassionate, the Inscrutable??! Well, it turns out the JCR won by a significant margin. At any rate, many thanks to Bryan Haut, the emcee-turned-bard, for his notable contributions! ~Beth ----------------------------------------------------------------------- FROM THE FELLOWSHIPS TUTORS * Josh Goldman (jdgoldm@fas.harvard.edu) * Courtney Peterson (cmpeters@fas.harvard.edu) SENIOR TRAVELING FELLOWSHIPS Lowell House nomination is required for the Gardner, Shaw, Sheldon, and Trustman fellowships for a year of purposeful travel in a foreign country. Some of you may be interested in the Goldman Sachs Global Leaders Program, which is open only to sophomores. U.S. citizenship is not required. 100 Global Leaders will be selected from around the world (half from the US), each of whom will receive $3,000. After a round of interviews, 50 of those will be selected to attend the Global Leadership Institute, a weeklong program in July with talks by famous people, discussions led by senior Goldman Sachs executives and Wharton business school faculty, and more. (Goldman Sachs will pay for your travel from wherever you're spending the rest of the summer.) Students who have done this in the past have found it to be a really good experience. The selection criteria are: * Outstanding academic achievements, as reflected in grades and class rank (I think this probably means a minimum GPA of about 3.6) * Demonstrated leadership ability and outstanding leadership potential, as shown in community and extracurricular campus activities * Excellent communication skills * Interest in developing a global perspective on world events, as suggested by study of foreign languages, membership in international organizations, experience with student organizations such as the Model UN, etc. If you're interested, please discuss with your entryway tutor who has the necessary documents or email me for the application forms. Please send me a resume (1 or 2 pages is fine) and a brief (~200-word) statement about why you should be a global leader. We will put forward several names from Lowell House, and then Harvard College will nominate up to 10 students. Please send your resume and statement to me no later than Monday, 26 November. Applications after this date will not be accepted. Let me know if you have any questions or would like additional information. Thanks. Here a few tips to keep you at your social best: - Pace yourself to one or fewer drinks per hour (this is the best way to maintain a buzz and reduce the risk of negative consequences). - Eat before and while you drink Ð a good dinner and great snacks can add to the fun of the evening. - Be careful with mixed drinks Ð it's often hard to tell how much alcohol they contain. - Set a drink limit and DRINK WATER (a life saver!) between alcoholic drinks. - Look out for one another: make commitments with your friends to have one another's back, helping to moderate one another's drinking and helping to stay safe. - Keep HUPD's emergency number (617-495-1212) in your cell phone. You never know what might happen, whether you are drinking of not, and HUPD is here to help you out in all sorts of emergencies. - Set boundaries about how much alcohol you are going to consume on any given night and discuss those boundaries with your friends. - Remember Ð you can plan what you are comfortable with both socially and sexually. Discuss with your friends how intimate you want to be with people you know or might meet Ð and make a personal plan of how to follow your own inner voice. - If you or someone you care about has had a negative experience,or you just want some help planning ahead, seek advice from campus resources such as: - Room 13 Peer counselors www.hcs.harvard.edu/~room13 617-495-4966 Thayer Basement - Lowell SASH tutors (lowell-sash@fas.harvard.edu) - Office of Sexual Assault Prevention & Response (OSAPR) www.fas.harvard.edu/osapr 495-9100 (information and hotline 24 hours a day) - Your Resident Tutors or Resident Dean - Bureau of Study Counsel www.bsc.harvard.edu 617-495-2581 - Drug and Alcohol Peer Advisors (DAPA) www.huhs.harvard.edu/AODS 617-496-0133 - UHS After Hours Urgent Care (5th floor of UHS) 617-495-5711 - Office of Alcohol & Other Drug Services (AODS) www.huhs.harvard.edu/AODS 617-96-0133 ENJOY YOUR TIME TO UNWIND ! ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ANNOUNCEMENTS AND EVENTS RACHEL SMITH WITH KRISTA LL MUIR LIVE IN JCR CONCERT Friday, Nov. 16, 8 pm, JCR A night of English and French indie pop with a bit of folk soul for good measure.
