Enjoy shopping period! -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ASK BETH, the HOUSE ADMINISTRATOR * Beth Terry, A-22, 5-2283 (lo-admin@fas.harvard.edu) Dear Beth, I am a new student at Lowell and I don't like my room. I have never had people walking through my room to go to the bathroom before and it's so small! I feel lost in the tunnels and I barely know anyone in the dining hall. Signed, Melancholy in M Dear Melancholy, First of all, I totally sympathize with the walk-through issue. It's really hard to adjust to at first, and it takes some fortitude to manage sharing space. (I have two kids, for instance, and it took me years to be able to deal with them escaping from their cages.) You see, we want to blend you into the community and make you part of it! So to aid in this assimilation we present you with an opportunity to engage in 'Community Living'. This means the walls are thin, square footage is minimal, and the critters assertive. It also means that other human beings are present in abundance with their own noises, needs and nosiness. However, the wonderful flip side of Community Living--the Yin to your suffering Yang--is the eventual discovery of the *Secret Lowellian* inside...it lurks in the chambers of your little nascent alumni heart, wanting to blossom. It feeds off tea and samosas, milk and cookies (taken weekly in the Library) and--when fully mature--a good draft of Stein Club beer to complete its development. So treasure your growing Lowellian as it evolves. You have support. Your helpmate in this journey will be your resident tutor, there to guide you through the tunnels and assuage your fears with Ring Dings and Doritos. Before you know it, M entry will seem like Valhalla and you will be scampering through the tunnels like a happy hamster. And your spirit will be awash in the bonhomie of the Best House On Campus. ~Beth -------------------------------------------------------------------------- FROM THE FELLOWSHIPS TUTORS * Josh Goldman (jdgoldm@fas.harvard.edu) * Courtney Peterson (cmpeters@fas.harvard.edu) * Susanna Mierau (susanna_mierau@post.harvard.edu) NEW LOWELL HOUSE FELLOWSHIPS WEBSITE We've redesigned the Fellowships section of the Lowell House website, featuring an all-new list of common fellowships designed to make it easy to find fellowships that will fund whatever it is that you're hoping to do. †Check it out at http://lowell.harvard.edu/fellowships FALL FELLOWSHIPS MEETING Come to the Lowell House Fall Fellowships Meeting on Sunday, September 21 at 8:00pm in the Library. †We will give an overview of the kinds of fellowships available and the times of year when you need to apply. †Students from ALL YEARS--especially sophomores--are encouraged to attend. †DESSERT will be served. As a Harvard graduate, the world truly is your oyster and there are so many options. Working in the private, government or NGO sectorsÖfurther studyÖtravel abroad!? Over 70 percent of the recruiters that come to Harvard are in Investment Banking or Consulting, so, sadly, there is not a lot of diversity. However, this is great if this is the area in which you want to work and there are many resources easily available to you.† On Campus Recruiting for this is about to start and you need to attend the orientation meetings on 17 and 18 September to participate. The best place for resources and information is the Office of Career Services. http://www.ocs.fas.harvard.edu/students.htm. The web site is fabulous with a lot of great information. The OCS office is just around the corner from Lowell House at 54 Dunster Street and has many people available to help with all of your specific needs. OCS also has a very full program of events throughout the year ñ from career fairs to resume clinics, interview workshops and meet-the-recruiter nights. Check out the web site regularly for the latest event calendar. But consulting and banking is not necessarily the career for everyone and the General Career Advising Tutor ñ Russell Miles - is here to help you think through that decision and work out what you really want out of life and your career! ††There are so many interesting and valuable options available to you and worth exploring.† Russell can be contacted on rmiles@oxfamamerica.org or 617-493-2990 to make an appointment. Or you can find in him J-11. Drop in times are: Weekdays 6:00pm ñ 10:00pm and Weekends 10:00pm ñ 10:00pm. Christopher Laconi is a Non-Resident Tutor for Pre- Business and Fellowships and Scholarships. He may be reached at claconi@mba2009.hbs.edu or 207-344-8923 for appointments.
