Resident Dean and House Administrator can be reached via email. (Dining Hall re-opens for dinner on January 3rd) *********************************************************** FROM THE RESIDENT DEAN * Ryan Spoering, Allston Burr Resident Dean Room A-22, 5-2283 (lo-abrd@fas.harvard.edu) As your Resident Dean, I am here to help you with all kinds of academic matters, and to connect you to Harvard's many resources. Please come to me with questions and concerns of any kind--in addition to my advising and administrative roles, I also help Lowell House students manage personal struggles, illness and anything else you may encounter on your way to your degree. - FINAL EXAM SCHEDULE. The schedule for final exams can now be found online at http://www.registrar.fas.harvard.edu/. Please check this list and let me know of any issues without delay. The Registrar's Office will correct any literal time overlaps in your exam schedule, but there are no exceptions made for having a difficult schedule (i.e. more than one exam in a day). If you have a conflict with another planned commitment, you will need to petition the Administrative Board for an exception, and I can advise you on that process. - FAS EMAIL ACCOUNTS. If you use gmail or another email service to check your FAS email, be careful! Students often have trouble with important emails not being forwarded properly or being filtered by gmail. Your FAS email account is used by the university for important communication, and you need to be sure that you are receiving those messages. - UHS FLU SHOT CLINICS. Harvard University Health Services will be offering the flu vaccine on a walk-in basis to adults in the Monks Library (UHS second floor) on Mondays and Tuesdays in December, 12pm - 3pm. - OFFICE HOURS THIS WEEK. I will have walk-in office hours this week MW 10-noon and F 11:00-noon. I'm also available other times; please contact me or Kit in the House Office (5-2283, lowell@fas) to set up an appointment. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ASK BETH, the HOUSE ADMINISTRATOR * Beth Terry, A-22, 5-2283 (lo-admin@fas.harvard.edu) Dear Beth, I heard that our rooms will be inaccessible over winter break. Is that true? Signed, Homeless in H Dear Homeless, Cheer up. It's only in the *freshman* dorms that you are kicked out and left to fend for yourself on the frozen tundra of the Cambridge Common. You are allowed to stay in Lowell House, but be warned: the heat is turned down to the 50's so it can be a frosty proposition. It may be a better idea to warm up to some fellow students and wrangle an invitation to their local home for a few days. Here are some multi-tasking tips to help you convince them (recently updated for 2008): - offer to pay for their Christmas dinner and eat the all the leftover fruitcake; - offer to shovel anytime, day or night, and leave a stack of twenties in their shoe; - offer to sleep in the attic and slip ten dollar bills in between the joists. Whatever else, do not barter with inspired proclamations like, "I'll date your sister". If you do end up staying here, we will ask everyone to register their dates on our winter break sign-up sheet at the checker's desk (up on Dec. 11th). We might even hand out a few extra blankets while we are at it--or fruitcake! It's an excellent insulator. ~Beth ------------------------------------------------------------------------ FROM THE FELLOWSHIPS TUTORS * Josh Goldman (jdgoldm@fas.harvard.edu) * Courtney Peterson (cmpeters@fas.harvard.edu) * Susanna Mierau (susanna_mierau@post.harvard.edu) * website: http://lowell.harvard.edu/fellowships NEW LOWELL HOUSE FELLOWSHIPS WEBSITE We've redesigned the Fellowships section of the Lowell House website, featuring an all-new list of common fellowships designed to make it easy to find fellowships that will fund whatever it is that you're hoping to do.
