AdvisingAll of the tutors and other members of the Senior Common Room are available to advise students – the members of the Junior Common Room – on academic and personal matters. This advising and mentoring function is one of the primary purposes of the Senior Common Room and Lowell House, and a task the SCR takes very seriously. Here are a few special things we do to make our advice more easily accessible to you. There are other sources of advice outside the House; many have Web pages in our links. Concentration Advising / Fall Advising TablesMany of the tutors and members of the Senior Common Room are available to advise students concentrating in their fields. Before the deadline for selecting classes in the Fall, SCR members will be available one evening in the Dining Hall in order to advise students on course selection. Tutors in some departments have the authority to sign study cards; in all cases they will be able to advise on course choices in their respective departments. There are also several regular study groups in different concentrations – check the Newsletter for details. Pre-Professional AdvisingThere are several special committees of the Senior Common Room and individual positions intended to help pre-professional students. Students may contact any member of the relevant committee with questions; for initial inquiries, it is probably best to contact one of the committee chairs or the House Office. The committees are: Masters’ & Senior Tutors’ Office HoursThe Masters, Senior Tutor and some of the Assistant Senior Tutors have regular office hours for students. Use them! Of course, you should feel free to contact them and the other tutors at any time. Non-Concentration AdvisingEach sophomore or transfer student entering the House is allocated a non-concentration advisor from among the Senior Common Room. At Lowell, we are lucky to have a very committed SCR, so that most SCR members have only one non-concentration advisee each year. The advisor is generally not in the department of the student’s concentration, or in that student’s entry; the sophomore advisor is intended to be a “friend” to the student who has no other connection with the student which might put the advisor in an evaluative or official role with regard to that student. House Writing TutorThe House, in conjunction with the Writing Center, has a writing tutor at Lowell House – this year it is Nico Slate. |
