House Nomination

As of the 2009-2010 school year, House nominations are no longer required for the traveling fellowships. These include the Gardner, Shaw, Sheldon, and Trustman traveling fellowships for seniors and the Christian and Segal traveling fellowships for underclassmen.

Resources for preparing your application

Begin by reading the short description in the drop-down tree on the List of Fellowships, our FAQ about traveling fellowships, and the descriptions and selection criteria for each fellowship in the online Harvard supplement to the Harvard College Guide to Grants, 12th edition. You'll also find summaries of several winning proposals for each of these fellowships.

We have compiled several essays written by Lowellians who have won traveling fellowships in recent years, and we have written up a tip sheet of things to avoid when preparing a traveling fellowship proposal. We'll send these to you if you email us () and request them.

For each senior traveling fellowship, there is a binder in the OCS reading room with mid-year reports from fellowship winners during their year of travel. Reading through these will give you additional examples of proposals that the selection committee chose to fund and will also give you an idea of what things work and what don't, and thus what sort of proposal is more likely to make for an enjoyable year.

Application materials

If you are applying for one of these fellowships, you should complete and submit the following materials by the House deadline:

The House nomination application cover sheet (sample entries are filled out)

An essay of not more than 1,000 words describing your reasons for seeking the fellowship and your plans for using it; this essay functions as both a proposal and a personal statement. Please begin your essay on the cover sheet and continue it in the same document.

A CV or resumé, not to exceed two pages, which includes your extracurriculars, employment, volunteer service, research experiences, awards, and other revelant experiences and interests (you may omit an "Education" section). Make sure to indicate your time commitment and level of involvement, and explain any awards that you have received. Do not include any activities or honors from your years in high school.

A release form to allow tutors on the Fellowships Committee to access your house file.

No letters of recommendation are required at this stage. Students who receive House nomination will subsequently complete official applications for the College-wide competition.

Lowell House's nominees are chosen at a meeting of the full Senior Common Room. Applicants will be notified whether they receive Lowell House nomination within one week of the application deadline.

Submission procedures

Assemble one copy of the materials in the order listed above and submit them in a large envelope either to Josh & Courtney's doorbox in Claverly 07, on the second floor (at any time), or to the House office (during business hours only). If you submit an application to our doorbox, we will email you within 24 hours to acknowledge receipt; please contact us if you do not hear from us.

All materials must be submitted by 7:00 PM on the application deadline.

We will be photocopying your application, so please print only on one side and do not staple anything.
